Can Hemorrhoids last for years?

I had hemorrhoids almost 2 years ago and my anus never went back to normal. I have what is like a little external ball of skin the size of a marble protruding from my anus that never used to be there. When I first had hemorrhoids it was very painful and bled. Now, there is no pain, but it is kind of annoying. How do I get it to go back up in my anus where it belongs? I can push it back up there but it always comes back out…Will it be like this for the rest of my life? Is this normal?
After researching it I believe it may be Anal Prolapse…Is my only alternative surgery…Or can I get rid of this by medicine?

Then I went to a doc and I discovered I had external hemorrhoids, he gave me medicine and got some checkups and he told me that it would take unto 2 years to recover. As of now it’s still not healed.
