Why is my dog shedding huge piles of hair?

I have an 11 year old healthy beagle. We have always fed him natural vegetarian dog food other different types of foods. He is still spunky and acts like a puppy even though his age. He sheds a little bit of hair everyday but lately he has been shedding huge piles of it. Any suggestions?
